ASCO committees and volunteer groups oversee specific activities and projects for the Society. Members serve on a rotating basis as volunteers on committees for which they have relevant experience.
On every committee, a Chair Elect, a Chair, and an Immediate Past Chair each serve a consecutive one-year term. Committee members are limited to one three-year term (some committees have shorter terms), after which the President-Elect may re-appoint a member following a one-year break in service. Committees report to the Board of Directors and meet at least once a year.
The 2018 ASCO Volunteer Application process for committees will open October 2017. Applications will be reviewed and the selection of candidates will be carried out January – May 2018, with term start dates beginning June 2018.

Annual Meeting Education Committee
The Committee assesses the need for, plans, develops, and initiates the education programs of the Society, with special emphasis on the Annual Meeting. Its goals are to provide education designed to meet the needs of ASCO’s diverse membership, provide comprehensive leadership and oversight for the Society’s educational activities and ensure that these professional educational programs meet and exceed the quality criteria required of the Society as a continuing medical education provider.
Annual Meeting Scientific Program Committee
The Committee reviews and selects abstracts for presentation at the Annual Meeting and publication in the Programs/Proceedings, reviews and grades submitted abstracts, and develops scientific sessions based on graded abstracts. The Committee also plans, develops, and initiates the scientific sessions at the Annual Meeting.
Cancer Communications Committee
The Committee develops outreach programs to increase ASCO's name recognition and credibility in the public domain. Its initiatives serve to enhance the prestige of ASCO products and services while educating the public and patients about complex cancer issues. Committee members also manage the Annual Meeting news programs and serve as Society spokespersons.
Cancer Prevention Committee
The Committee provides leadership and oversight of the Society's cancer prevention activities; works with appropriate committees and groups within the Society to enhance the quality and quantity of cancer prevention in the relevant programs; and provides leadership in joint efforts with other societies in the area of cancer prevention.
Cancer Research Committee
The Committee develops, promotes and implements ASCO’s activities related to cancer research and serves as a primary resource to ASCO in the development of research-related public policy and issue analysis.
Cancer Survivorship Committee
The Committee provides leadership and oversight of the Society’s cancer survivorship activities., works with appropriate committees and groups within and outside the Society to enhance the quality and quantity of cancer survivorship in the relevant programs and provides leadership in joint efforts with other societies in the area of cancer survivorship.
Clinical Practice Committee
The Committee addresses the interests of practicing oncologists, with particular emphasis on reimbursement for, access to, and quality of oncology services through advocacy and direct assistance to members of ASCO and its State/Regional Affiliates. The Committee is charged with providing input and advice to the Board on policy issues affecting the practice of oncology.
Clinical Practice Guidelines Committee
The Committee coordinates ASCO's program of health services activities, including the development of Clinical Practice Guidelines and clinical tools and resources, the promotion of quality cancer care, and contribution to the continuing education of ASCO members regarding health services issues and methods. The Committee hopes to enhance the quality, effectiveness, and appropriateness of cancer services from prevention through palliative care.
Conquer Cancer Foundation Grants Selection Committee
The Committee administers the Young Investigator Award grant (YIA) and Career Development Award grant (CDA) programs. The committee is responsible for developing policy related to the selection criteria, the distribution and processing of candidate applications, and review and selection of the grant recipients.
The Committee will assist ASCO in its consideration of institutional relationships, advice on the implementation of ASCO’s Conflict of Interest Policy, and educate members about ethics issues that arise in oncology research and practice through publications and educational session suggestions. The Ethics Committee will also serve as a complementary resource for other ASCO Committees, work groups, and task forces developing policies, positions, educational programs, and materials related to ethics.
Government Relations Committee
The Committee coordinates ASCO’s national public policy activities related to delivery of high quality cancer care, effective medical and continuing education for cancer care professionals, and a strong clinical research enterprise. The Committee is the Society’s primary resource for coordinating issue advocacy in Congress and the Administration, and will work with relevant ASCO committees to advance the Society’s positions on issues affecting cancer care, education and research.
Health Disparities Committee
The Committee leads ASCO’s health disparities initiatives, guiding the Society on a long-term strategy to effectively address healthcare disparities across the cancer care continuum from prevention to end of life care. It provides leadership in joint efforts with other organizations in the area of health disparities, and also works with other appropriate committees and groups within the Society to increase focus on health disparities issues in relevant programs.
International Affairs Committee
The Committee focuses on the needs of ASCO's non-U.S. members by working with various national and international oncologic societies to support worldwide research and continuing medical education in oncology and to promote the exchange of scientific information. The Committee reviews requests for ASCO joint sponsorship of educational conferences in various countries on focused topics of interest to oncologists.
Membership Advisory Committee
The Committee provides strategic guidance for member recruitment and retention, guides the review of applications for membership and make recommendations to the Board on membership applications in accordance ASCO Bylaws, and recommend changes in membership criteria and benefits when needed.
The Committee develops a slate of candidates for elected positions including President-Elect, Secretary-Treasurer, Board Directors, and Nominating Committee members in accordance with the Bylaws.
Professional Development Committee
The Committee provides oversight, leadership, and guidance to those volunteer groups who are responsible for creating programs and services that support and enhance members’ professional development activities.
Quality of Care Committee
The Committee provides strategic guidance on ASCO’s cancer quality activities, leadership in joint efforts with other societies and external organizations in the area of cancer care quality and oversees other volunteer groups involved in QOPI, the QOPI Certification Program, measure development, and health information technology initiatives.
Special Awards Selection Committee
The Committee selects for approval to the ASCO Board of Directors the recipients of ASCO’s annual Special Awards. These Awards are intended to recognize and encourage individuals or organizations that have made significant contributions to ASCO, Conquer Cancer Foundation (CCF) of ASCO, and/or to the practice of clinical oncology and to the care of cancer patients.
